Kalan curry

Onam is the festival of Kerala.Kalan curry is a traditional Kerala dish served with Onam sadhya. It is very simple and easy to make. Kalan is distinct from all the curd/yogurt based gravies .It is an ultimate comfort food with some rice. Usually kalan recipe Kerala style is prepared with Chena /Elephant Foot /Yam and Pachakkaya /Raw banana. Here I used only Raw banana, since my family don’t like Yam.Here is the recipe.


Ingredients
1.Raw banana -Peel the skin and chop 1 large raw banana into medium size pieces.

2.Buttermilk-2 cups

3.Grated coconut-1 and half cup

4.Coconut oil-2tsp

5.Curry leaves-Few

6.Mustard seeds-1 and half tsp

7.salt-As per required

8.Fenugreek seeds-1/2tsp

9.Dried red chillies-2 or 3 numbers

10.Green chillies-3 numbers.

11.Turmeric powder -1/2 tsp


How to make
It includes 3 simple Processes.

a)Pressure cooking

b)Grinding

c)Seasoning


Steps

1) In a pressure cooker, pour 1 cup water , add raw banana slices, turmeric powder, salt and 2 green chillies. Pressure cook up to 2 to 3 whistle. (Until when raw banana slices cooked well)

2)In a mixer add grated coconut,1/2 tablespoon mustard seeds, 1 green chilly and grind it to a fine paste.keep it aside.

3)Open the lid of pressure cooker when the pressure is gone. Add buttermilk and heat the mixer till it about to boil.If you are using yogert, give it a whisk so that there won't be any lumbs.

4)Add  fine coconut paste and boil it.

5)Once boiling starts, remove the cooker from the heat and keep it aside.

6)For seasoning, heat coconut oil in a pan. Add remaining mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, curry leaves and dried red chillies.

7)Pour this into the curry placed in a pressure cooker. Add salt as  per taste
Delicious kalan curry is ready.
